: : Great site! Here's a challenge for you; I'm returning to playing after a long while - and I'm open mouthed at the choices from Fender. I've been offered a very clean used Japanese J Lyte bass. Is this a better bet (thinking about playability and resale value) than a brand new Squire? Or should I forget both and go Ibanez or Yamaha? My budget is tight! Thanks.

: Used a Japanese JBass I got new in 1974 for many years. Never was very happy with it. It was passive and dull. Customized it, worked on it, set and reset it up. Ended up selling it and got what I paid for it 20 years earlier. If your budget is tight, check out the options on and use the search words "bass 4" or "bass 5" depending on what you want. I've seen great buys for very nice basses there (examples: $2500 Yamahas for $500, $800 Ibenez for $200, $4000 Ken Smiths foretc.) Good luck and take one step at a time.

Thanks, Duke. I'm hoping that a friend will bring a Mex Jazz over from Chicago, but I'll check out E-bay. Good luck to you, too.
