: Hi, my biggest problem when playing the bass is making the strings scratch when I move my hand accross the fretboard. What can I do to quiet down that scratching noise?

> Hi Allen....What I think you're referring to is string noise...A couple of
things you can do is roll off the highs on your bass or on your amp,
or try different strings. I'm not an advocate of flatwound strings, but
there are some hybrid type strings out there such as "half-rounds"
"ground round wounds", where the shoulders of the outer wire
wrap is either ground off or compressed down. Those types
of strings will give you the best of both worlds, to a certain degree
retaining the brightness of a true roundwound (almost) while reducing
the "swish" like a flatwound. Most string makers offer some type of
hybrid string in their line of products. You might try the Rotosound
"Linea Finish" strings, I think they're called the "909" series...

Cheers,

Pat H
