Hi Martin. When you move your hand from the first fret toward the seventh
fret, then you are moving "up" the neck. I think thats what your talking
about. There are several reasons to change hand position on the neck, but without seeing the players your talking about, I can't say for sure why they
are doing so. They could be going for higher notes that don't exist in the
lower register such as the E on the ninth fret of the G string, or they
could be changing to a more comfortable position to play modes,outline chords,
etc. Also, It could be that they are cutting a video and they think sliding
up the neck looks cool. Remember: If someone is on TV it doesn't mean they are
a good player, It just means they are on TV. Getting a compotent teacher would
be a good thing. They could answer your questions and give appropriate examples.
