Dan, this may sound strange, but after reading what your wrote, I decided to de-fret my bass. I'd been wanting to do it for quite some time, and your question made me decide to do it. I went to sean's site to get some basic info on what to do. I found one thing that is really helpful, instead of "yankin" the frets out with a hammer and a screwdriver, there's something that works a lot better. Use a carrot peeler. Maybe it's a potatoe peeler, depending on where you live and what you call it. If you don't know what I mean, e-mail me and i'll scan a picture of one to show you. Use it to pry up the bottom end of a fret, then pull the rest of the fret out with plyers, it works perfectly, barely even harming any wood at all, everything else on the site works fine. Just thought I'd throw in some advice.
