: many many years ago i played the piano. now, i dont consider myself remotely related to the instrument because my playing is basically wretched. the piano teacher i started on never taught me anything except give me music to play. i looked at my fingers constantly and... you get the idea. i'm going to start learning the upright bass soon and i'm going to want a good teacher. but hopefully someone i can afford too. how do i go about finding one? i'm in berkeley, california.
Contact University music departments (they will likely have a continuing education type program), local symphonies, musician's union. Get classical training no matter what music you ultimately want to play - it's the best foundation. You are absolutely right to be searching for a teacher. Learning DB on your own is just asking for trouble.
