Preston - the other reason for having an adjustable bridge is the ability, for a beginner, to start with a much lower action (that is easier on the hands). That way you don't have to buy two bridges (or more). Additionally, while more stable than wood basses, you still get some movement during seasonal changes, if you live in an area with wide extremes of humidity.
Let him get a good bridge with adjusters. It couldn't hurt...
