: Hi,does anyone have any ideas on the best small combo amp and or pickup for my bass please. I work work with various small jazz combos and need something portable, but with a good sound. I used to think it was the Polytone brute, but I can't find one for love nor money. Any ideas gratefully received.
The Acoustic Image Contra is a remarkable little amp - www.acousticimg.com - very portable, 200w into a forward-facing midrange/tweeter and 10" downward firing woofer. Very natural and great for small combo work.
Also a nice box for the money, SWR Workingman's 12. http://www.swreng.com/
Lots of players do like the G-K with the metal case and 12" speaker, although I've heard reports of reliability problems and G-K repair failures the last couple years.
Bass Player magazine did a 'shoot-out' of a bunch of small combos a while ago, accessed from the Gear section of their site at www.bassplayer.com
I'll also recommend the K&K Bass Master Pro, as favorably reviewed in Bass Frontiers magazine this month, but I'll also confess to selling that line of pickups. But I'd recommend it anyway. It can handle a wider range of gigs, both styles and volumes, than most any pickup system.
