cracked back

I've found a carved 50 year old Jusek whose tone and feel I like. My hesitation is that its back has sustained a lot of cracks. They appear to have been decently repaired, but I am a touring musician, and need a resilient bass. Is a fixed crack as good as no crack?

I'm days away from buying, and at this point am a glutton for advice. The bass has a darker tone, which sounds more pleasing to me in the practice room, but I need to project over a seven piece without a p.a. or amp.

Also, I'm considering putting gut strings on it. I do some slapping, and intuitively like the natural warmth of gut. How will gut affect volume? I assume sustain will suffer, but in our context sustain is probably lost anyway.

Flight cases: Gage vs Kolstein?

I'm a tall man. Should I hold out for a 7/8?

Time is a factor. I don't think I could bear another tour on a cheap Chinese ply rental.
