Yeah that Swingmaster looks really nice, and coming from Hammond Ashley, You Know it's going to be set up Correctly. If You live anywhere near there, you should go check it out. Given a choice, I would take a Swingmaster over a Strunal any Day.
I wouldn't say Carved tops are bad for Slap, But they really aren't Neccesary.
You already Know what I'm going to say, though.. If you can find an old Kay, GET IT! They are the best laminate Basses I have Heard for your style of music.
