: I just bought a Kay and am now trying to learn Rockabilly slap style. I have a question: I realize the action must be set high but how high? I have been playing electric for 22 years, but have little expirience with upright. I am ordering Mark Rubin's tape.

The current issue of Bass Player has part one of a series by Mark Rubin, and I believe he addresses string height. I would also suggest that the height towards the end of the fingerboard should be just high enough to get your fingers under the strings for the pull, but not so high that you can't get a good slap against the board on the rebound. The flexibility of the strings obviously also comes into play.
