: I have recently started shopping for my first upright bass, but I don't know what size I should go for. I'm about 5'8".
: I'm also wondering what to do if I find a great deal but it's not my size. Do I buy and adapt. I guess what I'm asking is "How important is the size of the bass".
You'll find that 3/4 basses are the most common size out there; easier to buy and sell. Occasionally you'll find a 5/8 but more frequently 1/2 sizes, too, but the latter are generally student instruments (not that it's not an acceptable instrument to launch your URB efforts, though 1/2 sized instruments I've played don't have the sound the larger 3/4 size do - exceptions abound, of course).
I'm also about 5'8" and started URB at 11 on a 3/4 size bass, when I was considerably smaller. While the 41-42" scale length can be initially intimidating, if you get some guidance and perhaps lessons, you'll find fingerings and techniques that can allow even those of us of minimal stature and shorter fingers to get around quite well. I know I shift a good deal more than my taller counterparts, but it's not that big of a problem.
