: I would like to learn to plane the fingerboard. Does anyone know of a good instructional book or other resource? Thanks A fingerboard should have a slight dip in the center of the fingerboard at about where the neck meets the boby. If you put a strait edge on the fingerboard there should be just under one quarter of an inch space in the center of fingerboard tapering off to nothing to nut and to end of fingerboard. You can also use a metal ruler, onefoot, and very straight, set on fingerboard in direction of string ,starting at nut,and there should be light under the ruler all the way up the neck as you move the ruler towards the bridge. If it does'nt have this contour then begin removeing some wood. Start at middle, about at the heel and work out both dirctions. Use a sanding block and start taking alittle at a timeuntill you see light under the ruler from nut to end of fingerboard
