: I have an old violin, about 50 yrs old I'd say. Its tag inside say Scherl & Roth Inc. Mfg Cleveland, Oh. Does this mean anything to anyone? Is it a good brand? Thank you for any information.

I'm familiar with some Scherl & Roth basses which are, of course, produced by the same company. What we're talking about here is what is frequently called a "trade name". It's probably been used for a variety of different instruments made by different people in different countries, etc. That's not necessarily bad, but it does mean that it would be hard to say (even for someone who knows a whole lot more than I do) anything more specific about yours without actually seeing it, etc.

I do believe that Scherl & Roth instruments are essentially student instruments. If yours is really 50 years old, it may have mellowed a little by now and could be sounding quite nice.
