: Are there any dealers in fine basses in the Boston area? If so, I'd appreciate contact info.
: Thanks!

Here's a highly "qualified" recommendation: There's a store on Huntingdon Avenue called Boston String Instruments. It used to be owned by a Mel Peabody who was a bassist himself. I haven't been there in years...but I've heard that Mel Peabody died and that his chief repairman bought the business and continues to operate it at the same location - Huntingdon Avenue accross the street from New England conservatory.

The good news is that I've also been told that there is still a collection of basses. The bad news is that I never really liked dealing with old Mel....he either was not very knowledgable - or just didn't want to share information. But things are probably different now.

If they don't have anything nice, a trip down to Long Island to see Barrie Kolstein (www.kolstein.com) would definitely be worthwhile.

Also, check out www.gollihur.com. There's a nationwide listing of luthiers and dealers on that page that is really great.

If you're ever anywhere near Washington, DC....I have a really fine Kolstein orchestral bass I'm planning to put on the market soon - come check it out!
