: I have a 3/4 U.R.B. (Hungarian,I think),which is an orange/brown colour, and would like to re-finish it to a paler colour such as antiqe pine. I think I have seen a few 50's Kay basses in this colour. Should I use a standard furniture varnish, or are there any specialist lacquers I should use?
: Also the black paint on the fingerboard is wearing off. What type of paint/stain should I use?

Order the Stew-Mac Catalogue from www.stewmac.com They have all the stuff you're looking for, including some videoes on refinishing instruments and the
ebony fingerboard stain you need. Also,DO NOT..use furniture varnish on that Bass! You can use either an oil base or spirit base instrument varnish, also available from stew mac. Laquer is kind of tricky to work with, and I wouldn't recommend trying it if you have no experience.
