Compression is the business. If you leave it up to the sound man running the P.A. at your gig you miss out on a lot of scope to change your sound. Other fab sounds are stereo chorus (maybe better in the studio than live), or a light overdrive effect (which can be similar to a heavy compression). Wah-wah is good, but it can sound a bit up-front in a band set up. Alternatively, look at something like a Zoom multi-effect pedal where you can program in effects for your whole set. I don't use one myself, but a friend of mine uses one and every gig sounds like an album because the bass sounds are different in every song. Don't be afraid of effects - talk to guitarists and borrow pedals from them. They'll love you for it.
