: I recently purchased a Kay bass w/gut or nylon G and D strings.
: They sound great, but I've noticed that they are starting to fray. I've been clipping the "hairs" off as they unpeel. Is this normal and is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Sounds like gut. You do want to clip off the "hairs" -- a help can also be to oil the strings. There was a thread on the 2xbass list not long ago, and one fellow recommended walnut oil, to keep them moist, which helps them from drying out.
