: : I recently purchased a Kay bass w/gut or nylon G and D strings.
: : They sound great, but I've noticed that they are starting to fray. I've been clipping the "hairs" off as they unpeel. Is this normal and is there anything I can do to prevent this?

: Sounds like gut. You do want to clip off the "hairs" -- a help can also be to oil the strings. There was a thread on the 2xbass list not long ago, and one fellow recommended walnut oil, to keep them moist, which helps them from drying out.

The best oil is natural oil from your nose
