: Having searched for a relativley cheap upright for about 4 months,I eventually found one for 330 (approx $500 I guess,).My teacher said this was a perfectly suitable bass for my current level of playing. After 12 months,I accidentaly damaged the bridge. For the cost of a new bridge and setup (100).I know own a lovely sounding and playing instrument my luthier says it would cost me at least 2000 to find anything as nice. So you see, bargains are there to be had.But surely the bottom line is; you don't need to spend thousands of pounds or dollars on a bass whwn you are still a beginner or intermediate player. My teacher has a beautiful old English bass from the 1700's.When I play his it sounds like mine and vice versa!

Vital advice that will prevent you from buying more junk heaps: Don't buy
any bass under $1500 again.
