: Having searched for a relativley cheap upright for about 4 months,I eventually found one for £330 (approx $500 I guess,).My teacher said this was a perfectly suitable bass for my current level of playing. After 12 months,I accidentaly damaged the bridge. For the cost of a new bridge and setup (£100).I know own a lovely sounding and playing instrument my luthier says it would cost me at least £2000 to find anything as nice. So you see, bargains are there to be had.But surely the bottom line is; you don't need to spend thousands of pounds or dollars on a bass whwn you are still a beginner or intermediate player. My teacher has a beautiful old English bass from the 1700's.When I play his it sounds like mine and vice versa!
Vital advice that will prevent you from buying more junk heaps: Don't buy
any bass under $1500 again.
