: The GK amp sounds very good to me most of the time at low to medium volumes. With a minimum amount of EQing I can get a sound that pretty closely resembles the unamplified tone of my bass. When the volume gets lound the sound starts to get artificial- somewhat metallic and twangy. I don't think this is a characteristic of this particular amp because it has happened on other rigs I've played through. I thought that maybe if I boosted the level of the signal going into the amp I could get more volume and still keep the sound I get when the GK is not cranked.

Maybe your amp doesn't have enough power.
What's its wattage?
Maybe it's coming on the edge of distorting so its tone is more colored.
Can you try one with more power?
You'd keep it adjusted lower most of the time so it'd sound cleaner.
Just wondering.
