: : : I'm a pro jazz bassist (upright) and I just picked up a washburn ab-20 cuz I think it has a woody tone. What strings do you recommend to bring out the "upright" qualities of this bass
: : I'd definitely use black-nylon tapewounds. (flatwound)
: : Several brands are available; LaBella 760n, RotoSound Trubass, Fenders, Carvins, etc.
: A buddy of mine told me that the nylon strings dont sound as loud through a pickup. Is this true? I am playing a Sigma acoustic 4 string with a Dean Markley SweetSpot pickup and I'd love to get a more "upright & woody" tone out of my bass.
Your friend's statement is only valid with a magnetic pickup, like used on standard solid-body basses.
The acoustic basses we're talking about all use piezo pickups, so you could play with rubbers strings and you'd still get a tone from the pickup!
Piezo pickups don't rely on the magnetic property of the strings, so the black-nylon strings are not a problem.
Hope this clarifies things.
