: I am currently shopping for my first URB and i found a cool old Kay for sale. The only problem is that the rosewood finger board is slightly bowed. Can planing fix a bowed fingerboard or is it more for slight problems? And how much would a new fingerboard run me?
Obviously hard to estimate without seeing it, but "slightly" bowed fingerboard can probably be planed enough to put it into playable condition provided all the wood is still there (hasn't been significantly planed before). My old Kay, with a replacement ebony fingerboard, had warped pretty badly, and a local luthier did some fingerboard work on it and it's just great now.
