: Good Afternoon!
: I am building a 31" scale length electric upright bass(26 inches of fingerboard is enough for me!), and am having trouble finding information on bridges and tailpieces. I would rather not fashion my own and use standard sizes. So I need to find appropriate sizes for these two CRUCIAL components. I am an electric luthier and know not of string bass measurements. Please help me!
: 2 3/8" string width at bridge-outer edge E to outer edge G
: Would a 4/4 Cello bridge and tailpiece give me the size I need? Or would a 1/4 Double Bass, or a 1/2 Double Bass? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Your scale length is closer to a 1/4 size double bass. However, I wouldn't be concerned with the tailpiece size; it isn't particularly material, as you will see many EUB projects with modified tailpiece arrangements, including my own, linked below. In spite of the truncated arrangement, mine sings very much like a 3/4 size double bass.
I can't put my hands on measurements for 1/4 and 1/2 size bridges, but from your stated requirement believe either will do. A quick measure of two of my 3/4 basses indicates a 4.25-4.5 inch wide bridge supporting a 3.5 inch string spread; this is with a 42 inch scale instrument, and I think the math supports my contention.
Depending on the type of pickup you intend to employ, you may need to be more concerned with the bridge height your creation can accommodate.
Good luck with your project.
