: What is your opinion/experience on these two brands of laminated basses. I want to begin lessons within a month, and am looking for durability, affordability, and ease of use.
I just bought a Strunal after looking at both. Quite frankly, I didn't find much difference between the two except that I preferred the ebony fingerboard on the Strunal model I chose. Otherwise, both good plywood basses at good prices. However, what I did learn is that, in this price range, set up is more important than the difference between these two basses. I chose the Strunal because it was available at David Gage's shop in NYC and he did an excellent and complete setup. Set up means: picking the best instrument from the manufacturer, dressing the fingerboard, new strings, new adjustable bridge, new tail wire, adjusting soundpost (Set up is worth about $1,000). Check out their web site at davidgage.com or call Sam at the store. They are all very knowledgable and willing to help you.
