: I am an experienced electric bassist. I play both fretted and fretless electric bases. I am now interested in playing bouble bass. As I am not interested in studying with anyone at this time, is there anyone who can recommend a book or a place online where I can find information on locating the notes on a double bass? For example, where does first position end and second position begin, etc...? Playing that monster in tune must be quite challenging, but it is a welcomed challenge for me.
Why would you want to avoid studying with a teacher? You can save yourself a lot of time and grief in your approach to the instrument by working with someone who has "been through it all" before. There's a lot more to playing the bass than where the notes are. The physics involved in the production of sound benefit greatly by someone helping your physical approach to the instrument, much less fingering, positional playing, etc. Actual positions are going to be different depending on string length, there's so much that will just not be communicated trying to get it all from a book.
