An unusual idea for a speaker design

Being generally disatisfied with speaker response on bass cabinets, I've been swotting-up on cabinet design and have come to the conclusion that a solution might be to mount a 15inch speaker inside a bass drum. My reasoning is that the most common problem with bass speaker design is that an infinite baffle (ie completely enclosed) cabinet, even with a bass port, inhibits free movement of the cone, which reduces efficiency. If I were to leave the skin on the back of the drum, this would surely let the cone breath more naturally, and presumably one could also tune out those unpleasant loud frequences (I always have problems around 'E' and 'Bflat"). I'm aware that a drum is one continuous parallel surface and this is potentially disastrous, but presumably by placing an absorbent tube lengthways through the middle this should buffer any frequency clashes (a drummer that I work with does this as a matter of course and his is the best live sound I've heard). Before I go ahead and ruin a perfectly good drum, does anyone have any thoughts as to whether this is a good idea or not.
