I use the Audio Technica (ATM 25) microphone. It has a low end frequency of 30hz and is made for bass instruments (including bass drums). I have used it in combination with a Gage/Steinberger pickup with great results. You use as much microphone volume as you can (until you start to feedback) and add the pickup to increase the volume beyond that level, as well as add a little "edge" to the tone.

I am considering the Scherler Electrodynamic pickup, but understand it is only really effective with the companion preamp they make. Together they are around $1,000 US. A very expensive alternative. My Gage pickup was about $175 and the microphone was about $200. For now I am waiting a little while before taking the plunge for the Schertler system.
