: I'm a bass beginner with cheapo electric I bought for 50 bucks in the early '80'sand a few bass lessons.. I know I want to play jazz-- can improvise OK on trombone, have loved jazz for 30 years, can play some guitar-- but I don't know how to switch to a decent sounding upright. It won't fit in my car, for one!

: What are some views on the upright electric acoustics as an alternative? Can anyone recommend a mid-priced model or give any tips about these instruments? I've liked the sound I've heard in concerts.

Electric Uprights vary a great deal in character. Many do not feel like or sound like a real URB IMHO-- they are simply another category of electric bass or are pretenders: fretless electrics in an URB suit. You will have to spend some bucks to get an EUB that more closely resembles an URB sound and its feel-- probably as much as it would cost for an URB.

And buy a minivan or wagon like the rest of us. ;-)
