: : Well, I'm going on a trip to China in a few weeks and I wanted to keep playing bass while I was out there. So the first solution that came to my head was to get an acoustic. While shopping I leaned that the majority of acoustics arried by stores are over $900. And when I come back from my trip, I might not even USE the acoustic that often. So I'm having a thought:

: : WHAT WOULD BE SOME REASONS TO BUY AN ACOUSTICS BASS AS APOSSED TO USING THE MONEY TO BUY ANOTHER ELECTRIC? WHAT ARE OTHER GOOD REASONS FOR HAVING AN ACOUSTIC BESIDES TRAVEL? HOW DO I KNOW I JUST WON'T DROP IT IN A MONTH?

: : Sincerely,

: Adrian, it is wise to recognize the limits of your knowledge. Montaigne used to say "What do I know ?" We are living in times where "acoustic" is understood as "unplugged", as if all music had to be played amplified. Actually, maybe even playing on/with instruments is outdated ? In this discussion group, the musical instrument of reference is the doublebass, the big violin played in an upright position. It is a bulky and fragile thing, which has been designed to resonate at low frequencies in times when the light bulb did not exist. So you're right, for the ease of travelling, some of us switch to electric bass, but really, it's not the same thing. Moreover, the amplification of a doublebass is technically difficult if you want to reproduce the qualities of its acoustic sound. That sound is so beautiful that we are ready to pay top bucks for it. That's something to be thinking about.

What I was really thinking about was the smaller acoustic not the large double bass. What do you think of that?
