I recently saw Chris Wood (of Medeski,Martin, and Wood) play a "freeish" jazz concert. He used this technique in which he held some sort of "rod" and placed it vertically on the bridge. Then he bowed the rod. It had a harmonic type of sound, but he could change the pitch, (it seemed.) This is the observation of what he was doing, but it might be completely wrong. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY CLUE TO WHAT THIS TECHNIQUE IS?

Also, does anyone know of any other strange or unusual sounds or "tricks" to get sounds on upright? I play mostly free jazz and these things are effective to use in certain situations.
