: I'm an old bluegrasser who has recently convinced my old partners to start up the band again. Our old bass player is long-gone and my 18 year old son has offered to play the upright bass for us. I have located a good intermediate used instrument. It has been professionally set-up and sounds great. My son is an accomplished guitarist, mandolin, and banjo player, who also gets around nicely on fretless electric guitar. He plays with two fingers (no picks). If he's able to practice a couple of hours a day, how long do you experts think it will take him to be able to play the same things on the upright that he plays now on the bass guitar?. I have no idea how long it takes to make the switch.
I recently made the exact same switch to standup bass. Given what you describe he should be able to pound out the root-5 stuff immediately. It will take some time for the muscles to adjust and that 41.5" string length takes some getting used to. Being able to hold down the basic bluegrass bottom end shouldn't take more than a month. Getting to the Victor Krauss level will take a bit longer. ;-) I would still suggest getting a teacher for some technical help. If you play this beast incorrectly you can really damage your hands (carpal tunnel etc..) Good luck
