: I'm hoping someone can help me out. I want to buy a bass for my husband, but I know very little about what good brands are and what I should look for when buying. I'm a pianist, and my husband has never played an instrument before, so neither of us know anything about what to look for. I have seen some relatively inexpensive basses listed on ebay (Palatino and Cremona), but are these worth the money? He will literally be a beginner, so it just needs to be something he can learn on that will have a decent sound. Also, he's 6'4", so would it be better to get a 3/4 or a 4/4 bass? Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!

The problem with the Palatino and Cremona brands of cheap instruments is that they are usually not in good playing condition and that it'll cost at least as much as they value to be set up (fixed) by a qualify luthier. Some luthiers won't even look at these things...
