There are a good number of 5 string Kays around. There is a brief but good history of Kays on Roger Stower's web page, which you can reach from the LINKS page, URL below.

Some bridge pickups will work fine in spite of the fifth string, but it depends on their configuration. The K&K Bass Max works great, as does the Double Big Twin-- you can mount the four transducers between strings, or special order one with five individual transducers, which I have done for a couple other 5 string Kay owners (Disclaimer: I sell K&K Sound pickups and preamps). The magnetic pickup you refer to is probably the Pierre Josephs.
