: I've just begun the search for a decent upright bass to begin with. I've seen the 6-800 dollar china basses, as well as Kay and King in the 1700 - 2000 dollar range. How much should I expect to pay for a good used Kay or King from a respectable shop?

Well, where you at? In NYC, a good, old Kay can run $1500-2000, other plywoods tend to be cheaper because of a lack of name recognition. If you check some of the other bass BBS's (talkbass.com, stringbass.com and the classifieds at Bob Gollihur's site) you may be able to find a private owner is cheaper than a shop. It's gonna be hard to find an older carved bass for less than $4000.
