: : : : : My daughter Tara plays the double bass, she is only 8 and to date has been using a 1/4 size - however she's not very big + her teacher has recommended a 1/8 size - and there seems to be very little information on them. (She's only been playing 6 months - so we're looking 'beginner' here!) We're in southern England - so if anyone has any ideas of where I can get hold of a second had 1/8 size in the UK, Ireland, France (or possibly Florida USA - business takes me out there fairly regularly) I'd really appreciate hearing from you.

: : : : I was just chatting with a fellow whose son (13) goes to a Summer Bass Program in Wisconsin (US). He mentioned that an 8 year old student was enrolled last year and played a cello strung and tuned for bass. Perhaps that's a solution, and an inexpensive one, since it is a short-term problem.

: : : Thanks for info on restringing cello - will look into it, in the meantime I've been offered a new 1/8 Zeller for 800 sterling (@US$1200) anyone know if this is a good instrument/deal? I have yet to work out how to measure basses - can anyone tell me how I know if it's 1/8 size or 1/4 size? Julia

: : I've never seen one, but I understand the 1/4 size scale length is around 34 inches. A 'normal' 3/4 size bass' scale length is around 41-42 inches.

: Hey Julia: did you see this ? It mat beat the offer on the zeller instrument. The only Zeller bass that I saw was Paul Beuscher's windows, near Bastille. Beuscher is known for selling cheap instruments accross the board, from recorder flutes to student violins and clarinets to keyboards. I tried the bass but it was improperly setup and not in a playable condition.

: You may inquire also at Cosi they make glassfiber basses for kids which are in the price range of the Zeller... these instrument are ideally sturdy for kids, but they don't sound very good. Good luck

Thanks Oliver - both web sites really interesting - my french isn't up to much by have e-mailed cosi (in english!) so hope to hear from them - the auction idea is good but I'm worried about bidding site unseen!
