: Thanks Bob - all is becoming much clearer (and more daunting!) - really appreciate your help.

Anytime-- If you haven't already found it, I have a pair of web pages with links to over 450 double bass-oriented sites, also linked to a long list of double bass luthiers (URL below - it has a link to the big links site, too). You may want to consider a reputable luthier as your source for a bass-- that way, you can be more sure that it has been set up properly and is playable, as a part of your purchase price - and won't get any ugly surprises. Many can be a great source for used and new instruments, and having an association with a good luthier is like money in the bank.

Good luck in your quest.
