Bob has it just right. You really do need a preamp off your piezo pickups, or you WILL get the sound you describe. I myself use the Fishman preamp for bass. (I also have a Sadowsky outboard preamp-- but I find it accentuates the high end more than the Fishman does; I use it on my electrics.)
And I like the SWR Baby Blue II, which has two 10" speakers, and, to my ears, gives a clean rendition of upright. It has enough power for big band-- that's where I use it. But there are other, good, amps. Bob's right there too-- speakers smaller than 15's are the ticket.
One last thing. You can go to www.bassplayer.com and read their artical on "amplifying the upright." You will find it in their "gear" section, if I remember right. (If not in "gear" it's there somewhere.)
