:A preamp is a Piezo based pickups best friend, as others have said. I have discovered recently if you take your dedicated preamp, and go straight to a power amp you get a MUCH more acoustic sound. I guess the amplifier used for most bass applications colors the sound, and tends to make it sound more electric to my ears (I use both an Alembic preamp/Stewart Power Amp combo and a Walter Woods amp, so it is not because I am using poor quality equipment). Try running your bass through your preamp (the dedicated acoustic kind) right into a sound board, or directly into a power amp, I was very suprised by the results when I did this.
