You will always get advice to buy an older instrument. However when you are beginning it is hard to justify the expense. If you can get to a bass shop it is always best to try an instrument out, since feel and comfort are important factors, then you can weigh price against sound, feel and comfort. I suggest having your teacher come along. If you cannot, some good beginner brands are Englehart, Strunal and Meisel. Which can be purchased via mail from Lemur Music or Woodwimd/Brasswind.
