A piccolo bass is tuned an octave higher than a bass, so a major third above the cello, but in fourths.
So I guess using a full size cello would be fine.
I don't know but maybe Ron was using a 1/4 size bass?
The problem would be to find strings for your cello-bass!
You could use a thin cello C4, or a thick cello G3 for the E4.
A thin G3 for the A3.
A regular D2.
A thick a1 for the G1.
