I am trying to find a good upright bass for country and bluegrass music. It seems like a good Kay is hard to find! I am looking for a plywood bass with action suitable for lots of picking and some slapping. I nearly killed my hand on an orchestral high action englehardt two days ago. I am professional musician in another field, but I am a new to the upright.
Any suggestions on finding a suitable plywood? I would like to spend around $1000 but could go up around $1500 if need be.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Robbie (in Chicago,IL but willing to travel to get a bass)
PS If I find a bass that sounds good, can I assume that it will work as well once it is outfitted with gut strings and suitable action? Or do I need to try the bass with a bluegrass set-up to know whether it will work for me? Thanks again!
