: I have been playing electric for 22 years and I am now wanting to play weekend gigs with a rockabilly outfit. I have seen a site on Palatinos and because of economic resons they look good. Can anyone give me the lowdown on them? I simply need a servicable bass that will hold up to clubbing. I have a good luthier to set it up. Also I need string recommendations.

Maybe you should talk to the luthier; often they have used basses or a line on players they work with that have a bass for sale. He may also wave you off the Palatino. However, you definitely want a plywood (laminated) bass to withstand the rigors of rockabilly -- old Kays and similar basses are popular for that genre.

You'll find a link to a guy who sells gut strings specifically for rockabilly on my Double Bass Links page under Strings. Also, there's a few rockabilly players under the Players section, as well as an entry for a page with several rockabilly players on it, who may also be able to make string recommendations.
