: I just bought a cheap laminated upright, and I cannot find any info on setting up: bridge position, string height, intonation, etc...first steps to playing. I am an experienced electric bassist...
The cutouts on the inside edges of the f-holes indicate bridge position; the legs should be centered on that mark. String height is purely a matter of personal preference, though you will find higher action often allows higher volume. Nut height: the thickness of a business card or two above the fingerboard. Intonation is in the fingers; there is no equivalent such as with electric bass.
You will find an interesting site on Bass Pedagogy on my URB links page that will answer some basic questions, but I urge you to consider engaging a teacher for a few introductory lessons with the objective to get a good outline of the basics. URB is quite different from electric and learning good habits from the start will be helpful towards getting the kind of results you'll want.
Good luck, and enjoy. Bob
